Internalized Sexism and Externalized Hate
By Kelly Jameson

Internalized Misandry, Causes of Boy-on-Boy Hate similar ? Internalized sexism stems from the messages and stereotypes we hear about women and girls all the time: Women are catty, they’re bitches, they’re frivolous, they’re flighty, they have to be passive, they have to gentle, they are overly emotional, etc. Eventually, because these messages are so ingrained in our culture that some women begin to believe that they are undoubtedly true.
There are different forms of internalized sexism, such as passive acceptance of these messages, a mixture of acceptance and rejection of them, or retaliation of these messages. The experiences of each woman who carries internalized misogyny are different, yet they all stem from some form of acceptance of the constant bombardment of mixed messages and stereotypes about being a girl/woman.
One consequence of mass internalized sexism is girl-on-girl hate, something I’m sure most of us are familiar with. Instead of rallying together and talking about how the stereotypes are harmful or how they’re misguided or downright wrong, many women who harbor internalized sexism believe that it’s every other woman but them who perpetuate the stereotypes and fall prey to sexist messages. These women, therefore, are more likely to take what they perceive to be the “male” side of things and devalue the opinions and feelings of women around them in order to separate themselves from all of the negative aspects of womanhood and femininity. And that’s when internalized misogyny becomes a tool that let’s women do sexism’s job for it. Who needs a patriarchy when you can have women devaluing each other and refusing to support each other and Femininity? L G

L G, also thinks this is why many woman in the western world attack the transgender community , and follow the male thinking as to stereotypes that are harmful and misguided and why they attack and devalue Femininity in them self and in males who are transgender.

Kelly, I grew up with a notorious penchant for what I now know was internalized misogyny. Since I was five-years-old, I thought that being a girl meant being weak, mean, and stupid. I don’t know where it came from, but it somehow entered into my mind.
The form of internalized misogyny I held basically went like this: Being a girl meant being weak, mean, and stupid. So to be the opposite of those things, I had to disassociate myself from other girls as much as possible.
L G and disassociate from Femininity.

Kelly,
This idea seemed easy to me since I’ve always been a tomboy. I played Hotwheels instead of Barbies, I played video games and engaged in a mostly-male gaming culture from a very young age, I was usually the only girl in my neighborhood and hung out with all the boys. However, from the middle of elementary school to the middle of high school, I pushed myself to be as much of a boy as I could be. In order to feel like I could be free from being a girl - which as we’ve established, I thought meant being weak, mean, and stupid - tried to be an “equal” to the boys and ignored girls and their opinions entirely and Femininity.

Kelly, Looking back, the most upsetting aspect about it was that I thought that by being a “boy” as much as possible I was actually being a “better girl” because I was fighting against the stereotypes of girls that had always bothered me.  But really, my self-worth still depended on what boys thought of me, and not what I thought about myself. I judged other girls for being feminine when they were really just being themselves, and it didn’t harm anyone or anything but my distorted ego.  All I was really doing was externalizing the hatred I had towards myself and my gender by “proving” how I wasn’t like my gender at all and shaming other girls.

In sophomore year of high school, I began to realize what I was doing and that I was not some kind of trailblazer for my gender at all: Internalized sexism made me a tool of my own oppression by devaluing my female peers and women in general, just as it does to other women everywhere. After that realization, I declared myself a feminist almost overnight, and strove to undo the damage I had done to myself and my peers.

Overcoming internalized sexism is not easy and certainly hasn’t been easy for me; it’s a complicated process of challenging and critiquing without attacking other women, questioning sexist stereotypes before trying to remove myself from them, placing more value on my relationships with other women, unlearning that is femininity bad. It’s all hard to unlearn, but it’s necessary in order to rise above the messages.

Some people’s experience with internalized misogyny are similar and some are different. However, the staple of internalized misogyny remains the same: No matter what you do, when you start to believe the sexist messages and stereotypes that are thrown at you, you do sexism’s work for itself. The problem with this is twofold. One in where it leads, and one in what it misses.

Where does it lead? Solidarity, but not the good kind. The inevitable end to this is the idea that a woman shouldn’t criticize other women simply because it’s “sexism” regardless if critical thinking would actually validate that. This is the problem with modern feminism, in fact: Because they are unwilling to sacrifice solidarity they end up with a movement doing little in the way of good that’s been hijacked by bigoted radicals.

What does it miss? Unfortunately, the obvious. Like most other commentaries on the subject, it fails to even remotely acknowledge that these issues apply to men as well. In fact, this kind of internalized sexism is rampant among men. The only difference is the degree, as masculinity has basically been completely hijacked by it.   Most people actually think that this internalized sexism is masculinity. It’s so invaded the collective psyche that in many ways it’s basically supplanted the original concept. Not a mention. Really sad, for what was otherwise generally quite a well-written post. You made good points, albeit failing to consider and address where they could lead. A discussion of how this kind of thing affects both genders, with some thought given to the possible consequences I’d really laud something like that. Ah well.

There’s one more conclusion that I can draw from this line of thinking. Maybe I’m grasping at straws, but it seems to me that this person believes that FtM transgendered persons are solely the product of Internalized Sexism. She implies that girls who “want to be a boy”, are only doing it because they hate women. This is offensive on so many levels, and I would’ve let it slide seeing as how she’s drawing this example from herself, but no. She’s trying to apply it to all FAaBs. And I wonder, does she extend the same “if you want to be the ‘opposite’ gender, you just hate yourself and everyone like you” logic to MtFs? Do boys who “want to be girls” just suffer from internalized Misandry? In this mind set, does Gender Identity Disorder, and Transgenderism fit in anywhere? Like I said, maybe I’m grasping at straws. This might not be the case with this person, personally. But at least this will give her the chance to clarify herself.

Androgynous women and men are becoming more prevalent in today’s society

Androgynous women and men are becoming more prevalent in today’s society

by Lorraine Goetsch on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 10:26am
Androgynous women and men are becoming more prevalent in today’s society and are often considered more fashionable than even the most feminine woman.  Androgyny has two definitions; the first referring to physical attributes of those who are intersex- meaning they have both male and female genitalia. The second has a psychological connotation and is a combination of both masculine and feminine traits; a kind of unified gender that defies social roles and psychological attributes.

When referring to the term “androgynous” in mainstream society, it is the psychological definition that is most often being used, usually pertaining to a person’s style or appearance.  Being androgynous has taken on a much trendier meaning for women and men in the 21st century.  It has become hip for women and men to experiment with the androgynous look.  It allows women and young men to incorporate the best of both worlds: the comfort of men’s clothing, along with the style of women’s clothing.

Androgynous fashion is everywhere these days and it's growing, so it is important to have a clear understanding of this current trend.

According to Dr. Lee Warren, a leading expert on male and female androgyny, there is a very common misconception about androgynous women and men, “Many have mistakenly confused androgyny with bisexuality, which is a psychological condition,” Warren said. It is true that in some circles, like for example the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community, it is commonly assumed that a woman donning androgynous clothing is a lesbian or bisexual, but more and more in mainstream society we are seeing women ditching the often impossible ritual of makeup, dresses and heels, for a more androgynous, simple look that isn’t as time consuming and doesn’t require all of the frill.

Well Dr, more and more men are  ditching what is jokingly call mens fashions  " The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior" well men's fashion really has not changed in 200 years where as woman's fashions have taken off in to the sky which is true fashion.  Well one of the definitions of fashions is "Something, such as a garment, that is in the current mode" men's fashion have been locked for 200 years in the current mode and men have come to feel like 2nd class citizens that must wear what has become a uniforms for men and no longer fashion at all.  The style characteristic of the social elite the men are locked in the same old dead style of a suits or tuxedos and that's it the same old dead as I call uniforms.
So today more and more men are looking to break out of jail and wear what they like or love and it's the young who are taking the first steps and taking from the other fashion that is around them every day.  It's form woman's fashion and  style some of which are old to the woman of today for example high heels, skirts, dresses, makeup,  purses.  What more men wish is to have more Equality in Fashions, true fashions and to break away from jail and wear what the love from the woman closet and their is nothing wrong with that.  So I hope the fashion industry will push more and more for equality in fashions to where men are enjoying the same clothing as woman and change the world to the point that their is no longer men and woman's section in the stores.
I feel that if the current trends contenue in the fashion industry  such as the Androgynou look for men and woman we will see equality.  We are now seeing new supper models on the runways such as Andrej Pejic, Lea T., Trevor, Valentijn de Hingh who are breaking new ground in the fashion industry in more ways then one, even the fashion designer are now pushing the envelope.  Think of the money $$$$ out their that the fashion industry has not tapped in to that would open up if gender was removed from clothing and became unisex, we now see men's makeup showing up in stores and on the internet men are starting to wear pantyhose, high heels and skirts/kilts they are not waiting for the fashion industry any more and more power to them.
The ladies out their in the world could also help the men by supporting the new styles and fashions that men with time will be able to wear with out fear from you his wife or girlfriend the fear of ridiculed, excluded, labeled, marginalized and called a pervert and the woman will have to adjust there thinking too.   Their is nothing wrong in having equality in fashions and if your man is not gay have no fear if he wishes to enjoy his skirt/kilt for this is just the tip of the Iceberg in men's fashions of the future.
As I said the wife or girlfriend will have to adjust there thinking as did men when woman started wearing pants back in the 40's, now woman are raiding other things from the husband side of the closet with out thinking that it may be wrong and it's OK but remember it's a two way street.
And what do we make of Trevor, the young man shown above? Is he cross-dressing? Is he trying lo look like a girl? Or is he just questioning the old, trite, archetypes with an even bolder push of the envelope? I don't have the answer for that question. Nor do I think it's that important. I can only state that Trevor's a very brave young man, and that he looks absolutely stunning. That's enough for me. http://wearetheyouthproject.blogspot.com/ An end to the rigid, traditional conventions of gender, especially as they relate to clothing, currently still firmly enforced, would be paradise. Imagine, being allowed to wear whatever you like and being accepted as you are. When that day dawns, humanity will have finally taken evolution to the next level and left gender behind forever.

Several young and rising male models

Boy/Girl
Equality in Fashions
Several young and rising male models who are just coming into prominence seem to be staying clear of the beaten path and willing to undertake adventuresome escapades into the realm of androgyny, or at least less conventional and bolder male fashions.
For instance, this top image of Andrej published by Zeit Magazine (see: Homely Atmosphere) Or they may follow example set by the likes of Luke Worrall, for instance, who dives into gender ambiguity and out again with total ease and naturalness, often displaying unusual and very creative stylings, like the fetish icon shown bellow, by Nicola Formichetti.
They may be following the path cleared by Andrej Pejic and other so-called "femimen", who model apparel which, by traditional standards, is entirely feminine, often verging on transvestism (a term I wish fell into obsolescence: everyone should feel free to wear whatever he or she pleases... and that's that! Stav Strashko Among those rapidly rising stars, I've been quite impressed by the talent of the gorgeous Russian beau Stav Strashko, seen here in several poses taken from separate sources.

EQUALITY in FASHION 2011/12

Thank you Samantha, I have a cause and this is "a person or thing that acts, happens, or exists in such a way that some specific thing happens as a result; the producer of an effect" I see no harm or wrong for a men to show their feminine half and dressing in womans clothing.   It's time to end gender based clothing and give the same freedoms to men in fashions that woman have enjoy for what 70 or more years? it's called EQUALITY. Let people wear what they wish and end the closed minds and Hate of today by Conditioning people and the world / nations..

HEorSHE or Unisex clothing.

HEorSHE is the name of Asia Wysoczinka's latest collection drawn in austere, straight lines and stern tones of black and gray.
In spite of the set's name, I find the results quite masculine, including the skirts.  Other handsome garments include this wonderful ample overcoat.

Maybe the "androgyny" suggested by the title means simply that the pieces can also be worn by the ladies (but then, what can't they wear nowadays?).

Likewise, most of the garments from the designer's "ladies" department could be worn by us males, for instance this ample long black skirt, which turns out to be...... a pair of samurai-trousers! Cool, huh? Check out the complete collection at  http://www.notjustalabel.com/asia_wysoczynska
